Funny But Make It Chilling: 7 Bollywood Horror Comedies You Must Stream This Weekend

If you don’t have the stomach for two hours of jump scares, perhaps horror-comedy is the genre for you. A good horror-comedy will make you both laugh and gasp. Yes, there will be a few scary moments, but they will be perfectly balanced out by all the hilariousness. Although the Scary Movie franchise popularised the horror-comedy genre across the world, Bollywood made its first horror-comedy, Bhoot Bangla way back in 1965. Since then, Indian cinema has explored the genre a number of times and some of the results are worth your three hours. So, if you don’t have anything planned for the weekend, here’s a list of Bollywood horror-comedies that will keep you entertained:

Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)

IMDb

An eerie haunted haveli? Check. A ghungroo-wali female bhoot? Check. This movie has got all the Bollywood horror tropes. But it doesn’t get unbearably scary ‘coz of the comic moments that’ll make you laugh till your stomach hurts. Akshay Kumar is an icon when it comes to comedy and he doesn’t disappoint at all in this one. While he’ll make you laugh, Vidya Balan’s portrayal of Manjulika will haunt you for nights. Watch the movie on Disney+ hotstar.

Stree (2018)

IMDb

Stree checks all the boxes of entertainment. The film revolves around a chudail who abducts men at night and leaves their clothes behind. Pankaj Tripathi’s one-liners like, “Vo stree hai, purush nahi… zabardasti nahi karti,” give us a beautiful take on feminism without being too preachy. Rajkummar Rao’s effortless comic timing makes this film our fave in the horror-comedy genre. Stream the film on Netflix.

Go Goa Gone (2013)

IMDb

Three friends are stranded on a deserted island surrounded by grotesque zombies. Sounds scary, right? But this movie will make you laugh so hard, you won’t have time to catch your breath. After consuming a strange drug at a rave party, everyone turns into a zombie. The three main characters are the only ones who are still human. Their struggle to escape the island is both hilarious and terrifying. It will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Watch the movie on Prime Video.

Roohi (2021)

IMDb

Roohi is based in a town where girls are abducted and forced to get married. Roohi, played by Janhvi Kapoor, becomes a victim of this practice. But, the kidnappers, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma are taken for a ride when she turns into a chudail at night. The film discusses forced marriages and subtly preaches that a woman does not need a man to feel complete. Stream the film on Netflix.

Bhootnath (2008)

IMDb

Starring Juhi Chawla and Amitabh Bachchan, this movie will make you feel all the emotions. It’s a light-hearted film that you can watch with the entire family. Bhootnath will take you through a series of emotional turns as a kid’s purity transforms an evil spirit into a kind man and leads him to the path of liberation. Also, Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo is a bonus. Watch the film on Disney+ hotstar.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022)

IMDb

Although this movie has some cringy dialogues that will make you roll your eyes, it somehow still makes you want to laugh. The film has nothing in common with its prequel Bhool Bhulaiyaa except the haunted haveli and a bhootni called Manjulika. This is a total Bollywood masala film that you should watch if you’re looking for a light-hearted, no-brainer comedy. Watch it only on Netflix.

Laxmii (2020)

IMDb

This movie takes off when a sceptic Asif is possessed by the vengeful spirit of Laxmii, a transwoman. Akshay Kumar’s comic timing and on-point expressions make this film an entertaining watch. The movie will also make you feel emotional when they highlight Laxmii’s past life. Laxmii is played by Sharad Kelkar and even though he’s got about ten minutes of screen time, he steals the show! Stream the film only on Disney+ hotstar.
