More than a decade later, Gossip Girl—a series which stands amongst those that bring fashion to the forefront through its characters—we remain in awe of its style moments. The perfectionist sartorial leanings of Blair Waldorf and the cool-girl vibe that Serena van der Woodsen gave effortlessly together depicted the lives of Upper East Siders. With the many events came the dresses, off-the-runway looks, designer labels, breathtaking couture, detailed accessories, and more. Ranging from vintage to fun and fabulous, the costumes for the show were designed and styled by Eric Daman, who will also be returning for the reboot of the series.
Couture And More
Keeping in mind the show’s style status, we dug into the archives for some couture looks and they were delivered. From tiered gowns to metallic numbers and all the finery by the leading names in fashion, here’s delving into the best of couture moments on Gossip Girl.
Evening Wear
With partiers, galas and balls being the order of the day in several episodes, it was only natural for the series to have its fair share of enthralling evening wear. Case in point: the crimson off-shoulder ball gown from Oscar de la Renta, the abstract leaf print offering by the same designer and Blair’s bow-incorporating silver gown with slits designed by Eric Daman. Matching with Serena’s bohemian style were the embellished and semi-sheer looks that did justice to her character, the evening wear on the show left no stone unturned to make a fashionable impact. Take a look at these and more below.
Designer Dresses & Tops
In many of his interviews, Daman spoke about not being to secure designer clothing for Season 1, the reason being that it wasn’t yet popular. But once the show caught up and made waves in the fashion circles, leading designer labels were spotted on the leads. From Serena’s pastel dress by Georges Chakra and Blair’s Bill Blass ruffle blouse featuring a plunging neckline and a bareback to her floral lace dress by Dior and several pumps by Louboutin, a number of iconic brands jumped on the bandwagon to dress the girl duo. Wedding Couture
With a bevvy of weddings spread across its six-season run, the series had lots to offer when it came to inspiration for the to-be-brides and guests alike. Blair’s full-sleeved gown with a tinge of blue was meticulously designed by Elie Saab, making its way to mood boards like her other D-day dress—a Chantilly lace applique gown by Vera Wang. A gold-laced gown by Georges Chakra Couture did full justice to Serena’s free-spirited character. Following suit was the wedding-goer inspiration—a tiered Ralph Lauren dress in yellow and a corset bodice tulle gown, also by Vera Wang. See all the looks below.
Back In Time
A nod to the erstwhile decades and time was explored through costume parties with Eric Daman ensuring that Blair and Serena’s character traits were not overlooked. Serena’s 70s inspired metallic gold outfit was a perfect throwback to the rock and roll ages, along with her and Blair’s mod-dressing avatar in red and blue Abigail Lorick dresses. ICYMI, princess-like ball gowns with volume to spare were consistent on Gossip Girl’s many high-society events. Our favourite of the lot? Blair and Serena’s flapper dressing comprising all that jazz. Take a look.
Headgears
Fascinators, hats, and headbands were all the rage, especially when it came to Blair’s obsession with hair accessories. From mini pillbox hats and fascinators to intricate bands and jewelled offerings, Blair’s style incorporated a range of it all, depending upon the occasion. In some instances, Serena too made the case for party-ready hair accessories. Keep scrolling to view a selection.
