Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, it’s said. However, the old dictum is losing meaning in the age of social media. In the last few years, beauty has become all about filtered posts and everyone wants to fit in the cookie-cutter aesthetics. Even the most privileged stars and celebs find it hard to accept themselves for who they are and end up opting for cosmetic procedures to conform.
Recently, international model Isabella Khair Hadid, better known as Bella Hadid, opened up about succumbing to these unrealistic beauty standards at a very impressionable age. In an interview with an international magazine, the supermodel revealed that she underwent a nose job when she was just 14. Talking about her decision to go under the knife and regretting it, she shared, “I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors. I think I would have grown into it.”
While candidly accepting that she went for a nose job, Bella also shut down the rumours of getting a facelift and using fillers to change her appearance. The model said, “People think I fully fucked with my face because of one picture of me as a teenager looking puffy. I’m pretty sure you don’t look the same now as you did at 13, right? I have never used filler. Let’s just put an end to that. I have no issue with it, but it’s not for me. Whoever thinks I’ve gotten my eyes lifted or whatever it’s called—it’s face tape! The oldest trick in the book.”
She further talked about how her insecurities came from the feeling that she wasn’t good enough and got all that she did by a stroke of luck. “I’ve had this impostor syndrome where people made me feel like I didn’t deserve any of this. People always have something to say, but what I have to say is, I’ve always been misunderstood in my industry and by the people around me,” Bella added.
In the last couple of months, Bella has turned into a mental health advocate. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star has been using the ‘Gram to share her struggles. From posting photos of her breakdowns to talking about body dysmorphia, she is taking her followers through it all. It is commendable that she is using the platform to shed light on both the good and bad of it in a world full of filters and intensely manicured Instagram feeds.
We are in awe of Bella’s courage and are proud of her for keeping it real. It is not easy to talk about a nose job or struggling with body-image issues in front of millions. Kudos to her for being so honest!
