You Could Be Applying Your Beauty Products All Wrong

It’s 2022, and everyone seems to have a handle on their skin, right? While you’ve been going through the ingredients list of your favourite beauty products, it’s très essential to pay close attention to how we apply our products, especially since we spend so much coin on them. Be it makeup, skincare, or even haircare, knowing how to scoop-smear-pat your products onto your skin is a make-or-break moment.

So skim through and scratch these common application mistakes off your a.m. or p.m. routines. And then get your bestie to toss them off too.

Here’s How To Apply Your Beauty Products Correctly

Moisturise Right After Taking A Shower

The best time to hydrate the skin is within 3 to 5 minutes of getting out of the shower. Instead of rubbing, try to gently pat yourself dry and then slather on a lotion all over your body. This seals any excess water on the surface of the skin. Thus, locking in the moisture for that supple, soft skin.

Pat Serum Into Your Skin, Don’t Rub!

Serums are meant to be applied to your face in small tapping motions with your fingertips or your palms. All you need to do is take a pea-sized amount of serum on your palm. Make the most out of your serum by patting it on your skin. This helps the formula penetrate deeper into your skin and boost blood flow to activate the cells. Avoid rubbing your skin and let the serum absorb into the skin on its own.

Don’t Apply Hair Oil On Damp Or Wet Hair

Smearing hot oil onto wet or damp hair is an absolute no-no as oil and water don’t mix. So if your hair is damp or wet, it won’t let the oil penetrate your hair shaft, and it’ll sit on the hair. It’s like applying new nail polish on top of an old one. Instead, make the most of your hair oils by rubbing a few drops between your hands and massaging it into your scalp and the length og your strands, wrap a warm towel around your hair, leave it overnight, and then wash it off in the morning.

Snip Sheet Masks To Fit ‘Em

As skincare obsessed, it’s safe to say that our Sundays are reserved for sheet masks. We like to snip our sheet mask at three spots  – above the lips, across the bridge of the nose, and on the chin. The creates room for it to comfortably sit on our face and be in full contact with our skin. Next, gently pat the sheet mask so it delivers hydrating juices to every inch of your skin.

Apply Makeup Using A Damp Sponge

PSA: Your makeup sponge should always be used damp and you should also clean it before every use. Get your sponge clean by rubbing it against a  bar of soap under the tap until the water runs clear. Then, squeeze your blender into a tissue or towel to remove any excess water. Et voila, your makeup sponge is damp and ready to give you gorgeous, seamless coverage.

Don’t Brush Hair From Scalp To Tip

Avoid brushing your hair by starting from the scalp to the ends, as this technique pulls at knots, creating tension and damage in the middle section of your hair, making split ends more likely. Instead, start by brushing the ends of your hair, and once detangles, start from the mid-section, and then finish by going all the way from your scalp to the ends of your hair.

Apply Enough Sunscreen

For pristine protection, it’s important to look for a sunscreen with high SPF and 5-star UVA ratings, but it’s also vital to make sure you’re applying enough! Experts recommend using two fingers’ worth of sunscreen all over your face, neck, and décolletage. We love this technique cause it’s exactly the amount of SPF our skin needs to ward off the sun’s harmful rays.

Moisturisng Mistakes

We love our moisturisng tubes. Don’t we? They are packed with nourishing ingredients that hydrate and feed the skin. But it’s also important to ensure that you’re using them right. Don’t pull your skin and apply the product in circular, upwards motions. Plus, don’t apply too much. Instead, stick to a blueberry-sized dollop and you’re good to go.
