Scandal Alert! 6 Of The Beauty Industry’s Biggest Controversies

The beauty industry is massive. The scope of scandals? Too many. From clean makeup to vegan claims, the topics are endless. And in that list, I found a few of my go-to brands too!

I love myself a spicy scandal, but I’m more of a Koffee With Karan or like a who’s-dating-who in Bollywood kinda girl. These beauty brand controversies though left me with so many mixed feelings.

As shocked as I was, the deets are super intriguing. Scroll for some hot tea.

Olaplex Faces Lawsuit Over Reactions

An Insta post by BBC on the evening of 16th February told the world that Olaplex is facing a lawsuit filed by 28 women. Reason? These women claim to have suffered from bald spots, blisters, splits, itching, rashes, and even broken hair among other devastating conditions.

But the products are supposed to help people with their hair problems, no?

L’Oreal Sued Over Collagen Claims

The products in focus for this one are the Collagen Moisture Filler Day/Night Cream and the Fragrance-Free Collagen Moisture Filler Daily Moisturizer. L’Oreal has been sued over claims that buyers overpaid for the products because the brand suggested these products can “smooth wrinkles.”

As per the Global Cosmetic Industry reports, L’Oreal claims that it did not claim that collagen would actually penetrate the skin or stimulate collagen production.

Johnson & Johnson’s Asbestos Scandal

While the smell of baby talc is quite comforting and also handy for the 4th day after hair wash, Johnson & Johnson is stirring a controversy globally. The company has been facing thousands of lawsuits for testing positive for small amounts of asbestos in its talcum powder.

This hazardous element has caused J&J to stop selling this talc in several countries.

But why is it still available in India?

HUDA Beauty’s Neon Obsessions Controversy

HUDA is a big fish in the beauty market and has earned the loyalty of beauty girls across the globe. But the Neon Obsessions makeup palette by HUDA Beauty was advertised as an eyeshadow palette and that was just the beginning of the controversy.

There were some ingredients in certain pigments of this palette that were not safe to be used around the eyes. However, the palette sold in huge numbers as usual, and without any warning. Some users also complained of having suffered from rashes, inflammation, and discolouration. A huge sum was paid to settle this with the complainants in the US Court of Law.

Quality Issues Aside, These Brands Faced Plagiarism Cases Too

Rhode Is In Trouble For Its Name

Turns out Hailey Bieber’s beauty brand Rhode is not the first of its name. There is another fashion brand with the exact name that Hailey had also tried to pay off, to get the name! But they clearly denied and now Mrs. Bieber is in the news for trademark lawsuits with regard to her brand’s name.

What other name would even suit her brand though?

Kylie Cosmetics Called Out For Copying

A Kylie Cosmetics photoshoot was very similar to one that lip makeup artist Vlada Haggerty had done before. While netizens started calling out Kylie and starting a conflict – the copyright rules over an idea are quite complicated.

I mean even her logo is very similar to another of Vlada’s posts. See for yourself:

Kylie managed to dodge the copyright lawsuit by giving Vlada credit and then paying her for inspiration!

That’s all the tea am spilling today. But I’m already reading up for our next tea sesh here!
