I Can’t Believe The ‘Depression’ Narrative: Ankita Lokhande Opens Up About Sushant’s Death
Sushant Singh Rajput’s death by suicide at the age of 34 triggered an avalanche of speculations on his mental health and discussions about the toxic work culture in the entertainment industry. With innumerable conspiracy theories about his death, the case took a new turn after the late actor’s father lodged an FIR against his former girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty for abetting his suicide. Adding to it, Sushant’s ex-girlfriend, Ankita Lokhande, who had been silent since his demise, has finally opened up and said that the actor could be ‘anything but depressed’.
Ankita, who dated Sushant for over six years, explained how he had gone through a tougher time and stayed strong. In an interview to a media portal, the actress said, “Sushant was not the guy who could commit suicide. We have seen worse situations when we were together. He was a happy-go-lucky guy. How much ever I know him, he wasn’t a depressed guy”.
The Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi actress further said that she knew Sushant and it’s hurtful to read everyone’s random versions of him. Ankita said, “He had his 5-year plan — what he wants to do, how he will look, etc. And exactly after 5 years, he had fulfilled them. And when things like ‘depression’ are used after his name…it is heartbreaking. He might be upset, anxious, yes, but depression is a big word. Calling someone ‘bipolar’ is a big thing. The Sushant that I know — he came from a small town. He established himself on his own. He has taught me so many things, he taught me acting. Kisi ko pata bhi hai Sushant kaun aur kya tha (does anybody even know who the real Sushant was)?”.
She further said that Sushant was a hardworking guy and always used to say that he would do farming and make a short film for himself if nothing happens for him in the film industry. “He started with theatres, then serials–he was a big star on TV, he was a Hero, he left TV when he was at his peak because he wanted something big. He tried films, he was a creative man. He did films. I cannot believe the ‘depressed’ narrative. He waited for 3 years for that one break in films. He was sitting at home. Not everyone has that patience. He had that patience”, she added.
In Ankita’s support, Shweta Singh Kirti, Sushant’s sister, took to her Instagram handle and posted the link of Ankita’s interview. Take a look at the post:
After Sushant’s father Krishna Kant Singh registered an FIR against Rhea and her family members, Bihar police quizzed Ankita during which she revealed her last chat with Sushant. The chats apparently showed that Sushant was not happy in his relationship with Rhea and wanted to end it, as she harassed him.
Meanwhile, there were reports of Rhea missing from her home in Mumbai. However, Bihar police has refuted all such reports, saying that they haven’t even tried to trace her as yet. Rhea, on the other hand, has alleged before the Supreme Court that Sushant’s father has used his “influence” to rope her in the FIR lodged in Bihar.

It’s been over 45 days since Sushant died but it’s still not clear as to why we lost him. All that’s been happening around is just undermining his life and legacy. We hope he gets justice soon.
