Our society seems to be slowly moving away from regressive traditions—at least, that’s what I thought until recently. A Bengaluru-based doctor took to social media to share a shocking incident where her friend was asked for a dowry of 50 crores by a man who secured the AIR 1 rank in the AIIMS entrance exam. This is, without a doubt, appalling.
The woman, Dr. Phoenix, took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent her frustrations and honestly, I am still in disbelief. She wrote, “So, the AIIMS rank 1 Urology MCh candidate is asking for ₹50 crore in dowry from my friend, who is also a doctor. Where is your shame?” She further added, “I’ve been on the phone with her all morning as she cries. Her parents believe it’s an expectation in the Telugu community that marrying off their daughter requires a dowry, which would wipe out their retirement savings. She also has a younger sister, and they fear facing the same dowry demands for her as well,”
Of course, users too shared their disappointment over the issue:
This case clearly shows that no matter how educated our society becomes, it can still be plagued by regressiveness and greed. Marriage is a beautiful union between two people committing to spend their lives together, yet some fail to see it as anything but a business deal. What’s more disheartening is to see how many parents still view dowry as an unwritten rule that must be followed. While I believed we were ready to challenge such regressive traditions for women, this situation shows that the fight has barely begun.
