The lure of luxury exists for a variety of reasons, and over the past few years, the hype graph for owning a luxe product has only seen a rise. While luxury conveys a sense of confidence, accomplishment, societal status, and exclusivity, does it really make sense to shell out a fortune or even take a loan to own that much-anticipated luxury brand?
Bollywood actress Shefali Shah recently shared her take on all the hype around making a luxury purchase, especially among the GenZ. The Darlings actress went on a family trip, where her ‘style-conscious’ sons and husband decided to revamp her wardrobe and replace it with a bunch of high-end branded add-ons. While her family was desperate enough for the actress to buy a little Goyyard or Supreme, Shefali stood firm on her question: ‘What’s the point of buying an LV when there’s no money to be kept inside it?’
Shefali even shared how her sons asked her to ‘dress up like an actor’, drenched head to toe in luxury brands. However, her clever response is what won hearts on the Internet. Instead of succumbing to peer pressure, the doting mommy instantly quipped, “I’m the brand!” Have a look at the post shared by Shefali that perfectly sums up how the urge to own a brand blindfolds us towards our crying bank accounts and how our confidence is so much more than just owning a label. Over the past couple of decades, the idea of buying what you want has been drastically replaced by the idea of buying what appeals to others, thanks to the immense social media exposure where information is served on a silver platter. And that’s where the constant urge to own a label kicks in. While there’s no denying the fact that the quality and assurance of a high-end product is unparalleled, it’s also high time we understand that our face value is not sheerly associated with the brand we carry.
Kudos to Shefali for putting out a sensitive topic with such ease. Here’s hoping the newer generation takes a lesson or two.
