We are sure that we aren’t the only ones who have fallen for dark forces in TV shows and films. So, without further ado, let’s talk about the toxic characters we are supposed to hate but we just can’t!
Joe Goldberg from You
We know Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is a murderer, stalker, kidnapper and inherently evil but isn’t he also kind, caring and passionate? All he wants is love and he is willing to go the extra mile for it. We know trapping someone in a dungeon is not the best way to do it, but he does make efforts!
Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones
Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) is a woman stuck in a man’s world. She could have been the perfect queen but she was forced into a loveless marriage because of patriarchy. So, when she decided to turn cruel and heartless to get what she wanted, it wasn’t that shocking. And admit it, you loved every second of it!
Baa from Anupamaa
Most of us would dread getting a mother-in-law like Baa (Alpana Buch) from Anupamaa! Sure, she has her flaws, but there is more to her personality! Baa is not evil—she loves her family, but she is set in her ways. She is not afraid to voice her opinion, and that makes her a feisty character.
Ajay from Baazigar
Ajay Sharma aka Vicky Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan) was witty, good-looking and charming. At the same time, he was cruel, manipulative and a murderer. He had the perfect plan for revenge and didn’t care who got in the way. Sure, he could have tried some legal options before going on a murder streak, but that wouldn’t make for a great film naa?
Sharpay from High School Musical
Despite all the hate, Sharpay was not a bad person. She didn’t do anything to sabotage Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez’s audition, even though she could have. In her defence, it is frustrating when you work hard for something your whole life and someone takes your spot.
Joker from Joker
On the surface, Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) is a homicidal narcissist who feels entitled to the world’s attention, but there is more to the story. He is let down by society, he suffers mockery, bullying and pain. Joker is a product of the darkness in society!
Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl
Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) is not the typical high school mean girl. She is intelligent, charming, ambitious and a go-getter. Throughout the show, we get to see different sides of the character including her struggle with bulimia. She is willing to do anything it takes to get her way. The biggest reason why we love Blair is that she never tries to run away from her responsibilities.
Emily Gilmore from Gilmore Girls
Emily Gilmore (Carole “Kelly” Bishop) was strict and overbearing but she did love her daughter Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and granddaughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), and wanted the best for them. She didn’t shy away from manipulating her family to get her way. On the surface it appeared that Emily’s love was always conditional, the truth is Lorelai never made any effort to fix things with her.
