Bollywood horror films seldom hit the right spot. Most of them are so sloppy and predictable that they end up feeling like comedy spoofs. Like, we are done with the puraani havelis, creepy Ramu kakas, creaking doors, and the multani-mitti coated ghosts. But just ‘coz Bollywood doesn’t rank high in the horror genre, doesn’t mean we’ve never had any decent films. Sadly, some of these gems have been conveniently overlooked. Wondering which ones are we talking about? Here’s a list of seven Hindi horror films that’ll make you sleep with the lights on.
Raat (1992)
If you’re a cat parent, we suggest you skip this film. One of Ram Gopal Varma’s finest creations, Raat will still give you the chills. It’s a supernatural thriller packed with all the nuances of a horror film. The horror starts when a kitten is killed and the leading lady is possessed by its spirit. It may sound stupid but the film is so well executed that you’d be scared of cats for days. Watch this film now only on ZEE5.
1920 (2008)
A deserted mansion, a mysterious “caretaker,” and a newlywed couple—this film has all the Hindi horror film masala in it. But do not go by the face value because this one also manages to give you spine-chilling scares. The film is set apart because of its evocative cinematography. From forbidden love to punar janam, this one has it all! Things get creepy when the lead (played by Adah Sharma) gets possessed by the spirit of a man who has been haunting the haveli for decades. This film can be streamed on Disney+ hotstar as well as Amazon Prime.
Raaz (2002)
This film marked the beginning of Bipasha Basu’s horror movie career. And while she might have tried going deeper into the genre later, none of her horror films hit like this one. It was inspired by the Michelle Pfeiffer starrer What Lies Beneath. While Pfeiffer did an impeccable job in the original, the Bollywood adaptation didn’t disappoint either. The movie had chilling jump scares that made up for Dino Morea’s expressionless face. Watch this movie for free on YouTube!
Ragini MMS (2011)
Currently streaming on Netflix, Ragini MMS is one of Rajkummar Rao’s earliest works. Inspired by Paranormal Activity, this film lives up to the standards. But be warned. It has some major edge-of-the-seat moments that can give you sleepless nights. Oh, and did we tell you that Ragini MMS will also give you some major trust issues? Do not watch it with your SO!
13 B (2009)
We admire this horror film for not relying on spooky BGM or weird camera angles. But don’t take it lightly for it still manages to give some spine-tingling scenes. Starring R.Madhavan, the movie is exceptionally well-written and the cast is its USP. The plot revolves around a man who moves into flat no.13B in an eerie building with his family. Strange things start happening when a TV show starts reflecting on what is actually happening in their life. You can stream this movie on Disney+ hotstar as well as Amazon Prime.
Ek Thi Daayan (2013)
I don’t know about you but just the thought of daayans gives me the creeps. And this movie definitely did not help. Ek Thi Daayan was a brave attempt at trying something unique. The experiment was worth it and the film turned out to be the perfect mix of classic horror and paranormal thriller. Konkana Sen did a phenomenal job with her portrayal of a daayan. And we gotta give a shoutout to the film’s MUAs for coming up with a truly unsettling look. There’s something about the eyes of the titular Daayan that will haunt you for a long long time. This film is available on most of the famous OTT platforms like Disney+ hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and JioCinema.
Bhoot (2003)
Currently streaming on Amazon Prime, this film starring Urmila Matondkar and Ajay Devgn, was one of the last of Ram Gopal Varma’s horror masterpieces. Yes, Bhoot relies on some predictable cliches like a haunted apartment, a newly moved-in couple, and a creepy maid. But it will also give you some scream-out-loud moments. The film follows the story of Swati (Urmila Matondkar). Things get scary when Swati gets haunted by the ghost of the woman who died in the apartment.
If you wanna spice up your boring week, these Bollywood horror films should keep you covered. Do not blame us if you can’t sleep through the night though. #JustSaying
