The 4B Movement is gaining global attention, especially after Donald Trump’s win in the 2024 US Presidential Elections. The movement which initially originated in South Korea is now being adopted by young American women, as a part of their protest towards Trump’s election as the President of the United States. The feminist movement started in the late 2010s when a part of the South Korean women population started rejecting four specific aspects of traditional gender dynamics: Dating, Sex, Marriage, and Childbirth. 4B movement advocates in South Korea argue that they had to take such an extremist response after the increasing discrimination and abuse against women.
The movement reignited after US women also vocally asserted their alliance against the misogynist and regressive policies that they feared Trump might impose after becoming the President. Donald Trump became the first convicted felon to become the President, igniting debates about his regressive stances against women. He holds multiple misogynist allegations and played a key role in overturning Roe Vs. Wade’s judgment. Sharing and discussing the South Korean movement, they have started using social platforms like Instagram and TikTok to spread awareness about the same.
The movement is now being discussed all around the world, weighing the pros and cons. While some women have voiced their support for the same, the movement and its amplification depends on the socio-economic situation of the large group of women in the particular country. Recently, a Reddit user tried to understand how much traction the 4B movement will gain in India, asking Indian women on Reddit to share their thoughts. Here’s the post:
The comment section was diverse in its responses, especially indicating that the movement will largely be followed by the privileged class. In a rigid society like India, fundamental institutions like marriage and family still stand very strongly, and individual rights are a new concept for Indian women. Whilst the 4B Movement might be extreme for Indian women to be a part of, there is a need to create a safe space for women to survive, thrive, and reduce the gap between genders.
