Weddings are always memorable, the sight of everyone together, having the time of their life is a beautiful feeling, a happy sight for all. But there are some wedding moments that are just too memorable. Considering we’re here, at the end of the year and the decade, and 2020 is right here, let’s take a few moments to recap all that happened this decade at weddings that we’ll never forget!
Some of them are cute, some started new trends and some made the brides and grooms famous on the internet!
Which one is your absolute favourite?
1. The ‘Cheap Thrills’ Bride
What this bride did when her baraat was delayed gave a lot of other brides inspiration for their wedding videos. She made a video on the song Cheap Thrills with her besties and it broke the internet!
2. Sonam Kapoor’s Bridal Mehendi At Cannes
There were a lot of things we loved about Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja’s wedding but there was one thing that really stood out. Sonam Kapoor left for Cannes Film Festival right after the wedding so it was natural that her bridal Mehendi was still intact on the red carpet. The media loved the touch it added to her glam outfits and tbh, all the brides loved it too!
3. Surat Mass Wedding
An Indian diamond trader, Mahesh Savani organized a mass wedding for 251 couples in Surat in 2017. This noble gesture was inspired by his knowledge, that in India it is very difficult for a fatherless bride to get married considering the expenses. Kudos to this man who is helping hundreds of couples start their married life with his charitable gestures.
4. The Ambani Festival
Ambanis are known for their larger than life celebrations, for even the smallest of festivals. For them, it was only natural to spend hundreds of crores on the weddings of their twins, Isha Ambani and Akash Ambani to Anand Piramal and Shloka Mehta respectively. From their outfits to the jewellery of the Ambani women, the two weddings gave a new meaning to the word grandiose!
5. The Bride Who Entered On A Horse
It is tradition for Indian grooms to enter on a horse in their baraat but it was refreshing to see a bride do it too! Instead of coyly walking down the aisle, this bride chose to ride a horse to do something hatke. Luckily enough, it did not clash with the groom’s entry ‘coz he came in a vintage car since he’s scared of horses!
6. Underwater Wedding
India’s first underwater wedding happened in January 2017 when the much-in-love couple Nikhil Pawar and Eunika Pogran got married at the Grove Beach in Kerala. The 90-minute Christain wedding was conducted with the help of placards with the couple’s family and friends present underwater with them! Sounds beautiful, right?
7. The Hindu Girl Who Was Trolled For Marrying A Muslim Guy
Sometimes, the Internet proves just how callous it is. In 2015, Tina Dabi and Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan made headlines, not for securing the first and second ranks in the UPSC exams respectively but for being in love. The netizens trolled them mercilessly for being of different religions. However, love persevered when the two got married in an intimate ceremony in April 2018.
8. Virushka’s Love
We have to give Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma for starting the trend of getting secretly married and announcing it through images and videos on social media. And let’s be honest, their Tuscany wedding was not only beautiful but it also was filled with love and joy and those pictures and videos are proof.
9. Lip Dubs Everywhere
We can’t exactly pinpoint how or where this trend started but it caught on very quickly and we must admit, we all fell in love with it too. The whole family coming together to create lip dubs not only made the wedding more fun for the people who participated in it, but the viewers couldn’t get enough either!
10. When Kareena Married Into The Royal Family
Kareena Kapoor married Saif Ali Khan on October 16, 2012, and officially became the Begum of Pataudi considering Saif belongs to the royal family of Pataudi. They first had a court marriage after which they exchanged vows followed by a grand reception. One of the best moments of this wedding was when Kareena donned her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore’s lehenga for the exchange of vows.
11. The Groom Who Teared Up
It’s common for brides to tear up during their wedding rituals but it was this groom who made us single girls ugly-cry into our blankets wishing for a man like him. Just look at the love in his eyes! God bless you two!
12. Wedding Hashtags
Thanks to Instagram, couples started creating hashtags of their names so that the people attending weddings could tag these pictures with the hashtags for the couple to find. This eliminated the need for constantly asking each other for pictures. And what started off as a simple combination of the couples’ names quickly turned into a fun and creative exercise.
13. The DeepVeer Wedding
Deepika and Ranveer made us wait breathlessly before releasing the pictures of their no-media, extremely gorgeous wedding in Lake Como. But there were two things that especially stood out about this celebrity couple’s wedding – the first was Deepika’s wedding lehenga which had ‘sada saubhagyawati bhava’ embroidered around the edges and the second was the sheer number of function these two had!
14. The Bride Who Sold Her Wedding
Some of the craziest things we’ve seen this decade have all been due to the rise of social media. So when our bride, Hansika Chandiramani, decided to sell her wedding, it came as no surprise to us. Founder of HC Media, a premier celebrity management company, the bride had the brilliant idea of getting sponsors to organise it for her given her contacts and contracts! There were other things memorable about her wedding too – the LED shoes she wore with her wedding lehenga, her baraat as well as her rented outfits!
15. Nick Jonas Became India’s Jiju
Our very own desi girl Priyanka Chopra got married to Nick Jonas in an intimate wedding in Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur on December 1, 2018. Just to give you an idea of how grand the wedding was – the couple reportedly spent about INR 3.2 crores on just the venue, ensuring that there was no revenue shortfall for the luxury hotel for the next three months. Phew!
16. The Indian-Pakistani Wedding
The story of Sarah Hussain, from Karachi and Mustafa Dawood, from Mumbai, is truly inspiring. Their story not only speaks of overcoming geographical barriers to get married but also of love and perseverance. Do read the story once, it’ll show you what true love really means!
17. The Personalised Wedding
Whenever you think of weddings, you think of planners and decorators. But this couple did things differently – they decided to personalize most of the details of their wedding to ensure that it stayed true to them instead of being like all other weddings. From a very small gift list to donating all gifts to charity to a memory corner, their wedding was only a celebration of their love, nothing else!
18. Royal Wedding Like No Other
Prince Harry marrying American actress Meghan Markle was a controversy in itself, given that she was neither royal nor British. However, it did not stop there. The couple decided to hold hands during the ceremony which is a big no-no for royal weddings and even honoured Princess Diana by having the bride’s bouquet made of Princess D’s favourite flowers.
19. The First Muslim Gay Wedding
Love needs to be celebrated, no matter what the gender of the people sharing it is. So when the first Muslim gay wedding happened in the United Kingdom, the world celebrated.
20. The Sporty Love Story
India’s ace tennis Sania Mirza and former Pakistani cricket captain did not have an easy love story or marriage. One of the first celebrity weddings of the decade, the two have shown us that no amount of criticism or obstacles can keep two people who really love each other apart!
Didn’t all of these just fill your heart up with joy?
