Yesterday was a rough day. I hadn’t followed my skincare for the third day, worked out for the first time in a month, was sleep-deprived, and had a busy nine hours at work. Safe to say, I needed some TLC. Usually, I get some pampering out of my daily skincare routine, but yesterday was not the day. So I decided to add a little oomph to my skincare routine (it was a whole personal care routine at that point TBH) and let me tell you, I haven’t slept this well in weeks! Now here I am, giving you the highlights of my self-care night and how you can achieve the same pampered treatment at your own home.
Make It Your ‘You Time’
Yes, sheet masking is therapeutic, and going to bed with moisturized skin feels good. But is that it? We all have days where we need a little something extra. Here are some extra things from my book of self-care.
Step I : Music
If you’re a teenager, you’re probably asking, “who even does anything without music”? A working professional with no time or energy to create a playlist – that’s who. But if you’re in the latter crew, fret not, POPxo already has a mood-boosting makeup playlist for you, which you can double as a skincare playlist. We won’t mind.
Before you start with your skincare, play some music of your choice in the background that will help you take your mind off of the drags of the day. Now, you’re ready to start.
Step II : Ambiance
Ambiance – read in a dramatic effect.
Your mood is obviously affected by your surroundings. So our second step includes little somethings to make it better. Light a couple of your favourite candles – some at your skincare station, and a few in your room. Now that your surroundings remind you of mimosas in Hawaii (my go-to fragrance), you are further relaxed into this self-care routine. On to the next step.
Step III : Double Cleanse
First things first, take that makeup off and don’t leave any bit of it on. Double cleansing is your best friend if you have waterproof makeup on. Gently take your makeup off, and tone your skin with a toner of your choice.
Step IV : Prepare Your Bath/Shower
Bath: Drop a bath bomb or bath salts or make it a cute warm bubble bath depending on your mood. Relax in your bath with a sheet mask (unavoidable entry) on. You can read a book if you’re one of those Pinterest girls? But if you’re in the mood for some wine, totally your call. This might be way too relaxing for your senses but don’t doze off!
Shower: If you’re not a fan of baths, try this. Set your shower temperature to what seems more pleasant to you (mine is scalding hot), and exfoliate your body. You can sneak in body care too, no rules here. You can either use a body exfoliating gel or cream, or a dry brush.
Step V : Prep your Skin
When you come out of your shower/bath, it’s time for your skincare. But first, prep. Prepping your skin before skincare? Yes, girls, we are in deep. For this step, steam your face using a facial steamer. This process helps the pores of your skin to open up and can help your skincare penetrate better.
Step VI : A Massage Of Gratitude
After steaming, take your facial massagers out tonight. Do you remember that electric facial massager that is still in the box? Use that! If you took a shower and are using that sheet mask now, gently roll your jade sculptor or face massager over your mask to absorb all the goodness of the serum. My favourite hack to use the leftover serum on my neck.
Step VII : Eye Love You Too
Our eyes take the heat of all our screen time and need some extra pampering. Pop on two under-eye patches and keep them on for a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, you can hold a private concert and pretend you’re Ariana Grande, or take a gazillion slefies.
Take your time performing the rest of your skincare steps with ease. I have noticed that mindful skincare can not only help boost your mood but also shows better results. Moreover, conscious actions will help you acknowledge your body’s cry for rest and get you ready for bed.
Now you can proceed to your throne – I mean your bed. You enter your bedroom with the continuing aroma of Hawaiian mimosas (again, a personal choice), because we left some candles out here too, remember? This helps you to take your relaxation to bed. Your body and mind are now completely relaxed and ready for your beauty sleep.
If you wish to exercise this very extra pampering skincare during the day, you can do that too – minus the sleep.
