Can Drinking Plenty Of Water Really Give You Clear Skin? Dermatologist Dr Shetty Weighs In

There are two kinds of people in the world, one who gulp down gallons of water and the other who nurse that one bottle in the whole day. Unfortunately, I fall into the latter. Celebrities love talking about their water consumption- the secret to Deepika Padukone’s clear skin- plain ol’ water, the actual reason Karlie Kloss’s hair is so beautiful is cause she drinks loads and loads of water every day, duh. From acne to pigmentation and early signs of ageing, apparently, water can transform your skin completely. But how much truth is there in this statement? To help us differentiate between facts and fiction, we asked Dr. Shetty, Head of Medical Services and R&D at Kaya Limited, and here’s what he said.

The Correlation Between Drinking Enough Water And Healthy Skin

“Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it’s mostly made up of water. Without water, your skin can’t function at its best. If it doesn’t get enough water, not only will it become dry, tight, and flaky, but it will also become even more prone to ageing. The truth is that your body loses large quantities of water every day, so if you don’t replace it by drinking more water, your skin will suffer the consequences”, says Dr Shetty.

You should be drinking at least eight glasses of water a day and keep the temperature lukewarm for both drinking and showering as it is gentler on the skin.

Beauty Benefits Of Drinking Water

Improves Complexion

“Water can help flush toxins from the skin”, reiterates Dr Shetty. So if you drink enough water your skin will look healthy and radiant. And who doesn’t want that?

Reduces Puffiness

Ever woken up and felt like your face and the under-eye area were extremely puffy? Well, water is the quick-fix you need. If you sip on lukewarm water throughout the day, you can actually combat this and your face won’t feel as bloated.

Prevents Early Signs Of Ageing

If you’re used to applying anti-ageing products and are worried about getting fine lines and wrinkles, then you’ve got to support your skincare regimen with water intake.

Helps With Clogged Pores

Dr Shetty further explains that water helps with shrinking your pores and making them less likely to get clogged and cause acne. The oil and water balance must be maintained on the skin of your face because this prevents excess oil and sebum secretion which then means fewer clogged pores.

Maintains A Healthy pH Balance

If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, drinking water is even more important. Water helps with maintaining the pH balance of your skin and that’s extremely important when it comes to maintaining skin radiance and getting rid of blemishes.

Improves Skin Elasticity

Staying hydrated helps with improving skin’s elasticity too. This helps in preventing wrinkles, lines, and sagginess on the face. So, delayed skin ageing can really be achieved by drinking enough water daily.

So, now that you understand how important drinking water is, we hope that you do up your intake. Let this be your reminder to chug a glass right now. Apart from water, you can keep your skin hydrated by using fragrance-free skincare products that have ingredients like peptides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, etc. You should avoid long and hot showers and visit a dermatologist for the best skincare advice especially suited for your skin.
