Hello, you fashion-forward people. Today is going to be slightly different, seeing as you might have gathered that we are taking a trip down memory lane. The lane being the 90s! A decade where everything and anything happened in films, the 90s had their fair share of goof-ups with respect to fashion. But, of course, times were simpler and as kids, we really loved it when we got to see those stars on the big screen. The fashion choices made by Bollywood actors at the time had a different kind of impact. Need a nudge to remember? Let’s take a deep dive into some of the things you thought were stylish back then and would definitely be revolted to see now. Be brave, friends.
Weird Fashion Trends Left Behind In The 90s
From all things clenched and transparent (what even was with transparent clothing and the 90s?) to bizarre hair accessories, here’s stepping into the tricky fashion of the decade.
The ‘Cool’ Chain
Okay excuse me right away but who on earth wears a chain that LITERALLY spells ‘COOL’? Rahul from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai might have thought he was, indeed, too cool for school (as did most of us) but honestly Rahul, this bizarre fashion choice is hardly going to sail your boat right now. Can’t believe I fell for this, SMH.
Fitted & Transparent
Umm yeah, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai did release super early in 2000, but the inspiration from the 90s trends was still heavy and the film managed to show that. While Hrithik Roshan’s hook step was being practised left, right and centre in every household, kids in the 90s were also quite taken with the debutante’s style. Never mind the transparent, tight tees because when we stan, we stan. Unbelievable, you guys.
Bizarre Hair Accessories
If there was an award for random and weird hair accessories, it would probably be for Karisma Kapoor’s many looks in Andaz Apna Apna. The film is a laugh riot for sure but what was happening with HMU back then? Oh and before you say you didn’t fall for this weird 90s fashion trend, quit it because all of us did!
And Some More!
Another major trend that was all the rage and worn in the most OTT manner ever was this one—hair beads in every colour possible, worn with every outfit. While 7-year-old me thought I looked *cute*, I am just going to bury my head in the pillow when I look at all those photographs from the 90s. Talk about keeping proof!
Sunglasses à la Govinda
90s fashion would not be complete without talking about the truly iconic Govinda. From kitschy shirts to clashing colours, only the Bollywood actor could have pulled off the looks he did in films. Maybe that’s why these green sunglasses (?) are making me slightly nervous right now, something that didn’t happen back in the day.
OTT Outfits
All the moms of the 90s made some really extravagant clothes for us kids, and most of them inspired highly by ‘IT’ fashion of the films, were worn to us at birthday parties and the rest. Meaning my friends, no matter how much you shake your heads in collective disbelief, you have been through these outrageous ruffles, all-over prints and more.
Is That A Dungaree?
I should be more clear—Is that a dungaree I wore as a child? While most of us have been there and donned those red, yellow, green (you get the idea) iterations, pulling off those colours today make me feel dizzy.
Did I really wear that and like most of that? Join the bizarre fashion club of the 90s.
