Skincare Just Got Lit: Here’s What You Need To Know About LED Light Therapy

When it comes to skincare, you should do whatever works for your skin, be it using two products or twenty! And just when most of us finally figured out what is working in favour of our skin, we have another step to add to it. And no, it’s not a new product, but an extensive step that has left us curious.

We’re talking about the LED skin treatments! We all have seen these masks on the ‘gram but what exactly are they? Can we do it at home? Or do we need to get it done by a dermatologist at a clinic? We’re answering all your queries below…

What Is LED Skin Treatment?

LED (or the light-emitting diode) skin treatment or therapy is a facial treatment that uses narrowband LED light energy to trigger our body’s cell generation process. It helps the cells to generate faster and accelerates their formation which helps repair our skin from inside out. It’s recommended for faster cell rejuvenation, inflammatory skin conditions and to treat skin woes such as wounds, psoriasis, acne, eczema, and even sun damage.

The colour wavelengths are also viable for people who have certain skin conditions that have decreased the production of skin cells in their bodies.

How Exactly Does It Work?

LED therapy requires our skin to be exposed to certain lights that penetrate our skin (at different depths) and give us results such as reduction of wrinkles, eradication of acne-causing bacteria and visibly plumper and brighter skin. This is not a one-time thing and might require multiple settings for promising results, although you will see a difference from your first appointment itself.

The treatment requires the use of light that stimulates the production of elastin and collagen (hence the cell repair and reduction of ageing properties), kills bacteria, boosts blood circulation and tissue repair.

All you need to do is lie down while the LED device does all things magical under your skin.

Types Of LED Treatements

The LED session usually lasts for about 20 minutes. If you’re getting it done by a professional, there are two ways in which it’s done:

– Direct exposure to the LED lights.

– Using an LED infused light wand to waver over your skin.

If required, the skin is prepped with brightening peels and extractions, followed by your treatment. Anti-ageing serums are also used to speed up sessions, especially for people over the age of 35. Using serums or creams that contain retinols, peptides or argan oil will leave you with amplified results. If you only wish to have only the treatment, your dermatologist will finish the session with the required SPF.

There are mainly two types of LED treatments: Blue and Red.

Red LED Treatment

The red LED skin treatment requires using the red LED light that:

– Reduces redness

LED Treatment At Home

Since stepping out of our homes doesn’t look like the right thing to do at the moment, people are opting for at-home LED treatments. However, unlike professional treatment, home devices have lower frequencies and therefore are not as effective.

#ProTip: If you have NEVER tried this treatment before, please do not try it at home! Always consult a dermatologist before trying any kind of harsh skin treatment.

But, is it for everybody? The answer is no. Here’s why:

– It’s expensive (Rs 1000-1500 per session). The professional may suggest you at least 8-10 settings.

– Results are not guaranteed.

– If you are on skin medication, it is not advised.

– It may not suit you at all.

– Might leave you with increased skin inflammation, redness, swelling, rashes and immense pain.

So should you go for it? If you have prior experience with LED light therapy and you’ve seen positive results, by all means, go for it. If this is the first time, dip your toes in and test the waters before you go all in. Consult your dermatologist if required.
