If there is one thing all women in India are thinking about right now, it’s what they should wear to Diwali parties, friend’s wedding functions, and the plethora of events coming their way in the following two months. So, instead of cramming all stores and waiting for your favourite things to go on discount, how about you take inspiration from Bollywood?
After the Bollywood-style inspired stories for famous farewell sarees and cool outfits for the first day of college, here are 13 legendary outfits from Bollywood Diwalis and weddings that are still iconic and hot in trend for a fabulous 2018. Take festive wear inspiration from these styles and make every twirl count this festive, wedding, and party season.
1. Kareena Kapoor – Bole Chudiya, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Kareena’s pink sharara, much like Poo’s other outfits and fashion habits from 16 years ago, is still the first outfit that comes to mind for a special occasion. The ombré sharara and the slant-cut blouse are not going out of style anytime soon.
2. Deepika Padukone – Kabira (Encore), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Deepika aka Naina Talwar gave us a lot of desi outfits in YJHD but this lehenga choli is just so 2019. Get yourself a sexy tube choli and a bright lehenga skirt this season, and don’t forget to carry a matching potli bag with it.
3. Alia Bhatt – Radha, Student Of The Year
My favourite part about this lehenga choli, which often goes unnoticed by most, is how the border of the lehenga has a bright green lining and made Alia’s twirls more beautiful than ever. She carried an orange dupatta with her silver and pink lehenga and added the right colours to the mix. Go try the contrasting lining hack this time.
4. Priyanka Chopra – Desi Girl, Dostana
And of course, Priyanka’s famous muted golden saree. There can’t be a list of iconic outfits to which PC’s Desi Girl look won’t make it. A backless blouse, a bralette-style front, and a thin-pleated pallu, yes, that’s the ‘it’ saree for the modern woman.
5. Kareena Kapoor – Nagada Nagada, Jab We Met
This look from Geet’s closet has always been close to my heart. It’s amazing how she paired a simple, cotton Patiala salwar with a heavy kurta and dupatta, and made it look engagement-worthy effortlessly. And the fact that all three pieces are in a different colour makes this look even more special.
6. Alia Bhatt – Badri Ki Dhulhania, Badrinath Ki Dhulhania
Alia ditched the dupatta with her yellow lehenga choli in this song and looked as elegant as ever even without it. Make mirror work your go-to embroidery pattern this season. You don’t even have to buy a new one. Just take any of your old cropped cold-shoulder tops and add mirror details all over it. This Diwali, DIY at home.
7. Deepika Padukone – Lahu Munh Lag Gaya, Goliyon Ki Rassleela Ram-Leela
Deepika’s yet another iconic look was seen in Ram-Leela. A wonderful play of red, white, and black all in one with nothing but a pair of statement gold-toned earrings as an accessory is worth taking a note of. POPxo Tip: if opting for a deep back (not backless) blouse, tie your hair into a bun to flaunt that sexy back.
8. Sushmita Sen – Tumse Milke Dilka Jo Haal, Main Hoon Na
Sushmita played the role of a chemistry professor in this film but schooled us all about Indian fashion. This look would be just perfect for the lover of black everything. Go for a knotted blouse and a belted lehenga skirt this season. Accessorise with an exaggerated maang-tika and lots of bangles.
9. Kajol – Mehendi Lagake Rakhna, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
Kajol’s bright green traditional Punjabi suit set in this song is evergreen. She wore a lungi with a tunic which was made to look all the more glamorous with a short embellished waistcoat. The dupatta was taken in a cape-style and the traditional jutti completed the look. I can practical listen to the song just by looking at this outfit.
10. Madhuri Dixit – Didi Tera Dewar Deewana, Hum Apke Hain Koun
This movie gave us a fun-filled (well, for most parts) love story and cute outfits courtesy Madhuri. This purple saree with golden embroidery on it is a class act. While I still wonder how she made dancing look so effortless in it, how about you trade your chiffon saree for this unforgettable number?
11. Preity Zinta – Maahi Ve, Kal Ho Na Ho
If Preity Zinta has looked like an angel ever, it is in this song right here. A magnificent neon blue with a nude base, how wonderful was this colour combination. It balances out the outfit without going OTT and compromising on trend. Since neons are making their way back, what better than this combo for some inspo?
12. Sonam Kapoor – By The Way, Aisha
Talking about colour combinations, white and grey is still a party-favourite and going strong, and we have Aisha aka Sonam Kapoor to thank for it. With a net lehenga skirt and a boat neck choli, the heavy grey dupatta, and that statement necklace is something me and my girls still daydream about.
13. Parineeti Chopra – Punjabi Wedding Song, Hasee Toh Phasee
Last but not the least, Parineeti’s mustard lehenga choli from this song will be perfect for a Ghar ka function or a friend’s wedding. The colours in this ensemble will suit most skin tones and the dupatta drape will flatter all body types. Go for a blingy border with such colours to add some glam to your OOTD game.
