The movie Veere Di Wedding released last week and has already created a buzz. The female star cast including Swara Bhasker, Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Shikha Talsania delivered power-packed performances. I recently watched the film and one scene that I knew would create a sensation was Swara Bhasker’s masturbating on the big screen. Did I spell that right? Ashamed of self-pleasure? In a country where cases of men masturbating in public trains haven’t been questioned, are we really feeling embarrassed about a woman indulging herself? Movies like Mastizaade and Grand Masti have endorsed extra-marital affairs, objectification, and sexual assault, and they have been deemed funny. But sure, a woman pleasuring herself in the privacy of her home offended people.
Thankfully, not everyone felt ashamed and though the trolls were in abundance, Twitter did take a stand against popular opinion.
The ones who are complaining they can’t watch #veerediwedding with the family…um, you’re not supposed to!
