There’s a first time for everything, and experimenting with make-up is one of them. Let’s be honest, no one is perfect in the first go. Only a person who has mastered the art of applying make-up would know how challenging it was to initially ace the wing eyeliner look at one go. After all, failing is the first attempt to success. For every mistake that you make, remember that you aren’t alone and there’s nothing to feel embarrassed about. Here are a few make-up mistakes by our very own POPxo Team.
1. I wore the wrong shade base
As a teenager, I made the mistake of lathering on a shade that belonged to my sister – who, by the way, is two shades lighter than me. I have horrifying pictures from my cousin’s wedding, where the tone on my neck does not match my face. No matter what anyone says, you need to pick your own foundation. One that has been carefully selected with the help of a professional. I’d recommend getting the M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 (Rs 2,450). It comes with sun protection (SPF 15) and works wonders for my skin. – Nitya Uppal, Assistant Editor
2. I didn’t know how important undertones were
When I began experimenting with make-up, I got myself matched at a M.A.C store and unfortunately ended up with a foundation that was so orange I looked like an Oompa Loompa! Determined to find my match, I went back the week after and got a shade matched by a better make-up artist. Just keep your skin’s undertone in mind while you pick a foundation. Stay away from foundations which are too light for you and make sure you match the foundation to your neck. I’m currently obsessed with the Photo Finish Foundation Primer Radiance (Rs 3,100).

3. I applied too much kajal.
The first time I picked up a kajal was during my second year of Junior College. I will never forget that day because it was beyond embarrassing! I applied thick, black kajal just before I stepped out from my house. To my misfortune, the kajal smudged when I reached class. Since I used too much product, I had panda eyes! Yep, for a 7 am lecture, I turned up looking like a hot mess. I learned from my mistake that day. Never apply too much of kajal, just one stroke should work just fine. My current favourite make-up product is the Maybelline New York Colossal Super Black Kajal (Rs 300). I love it because it’s both, smudge and waterproof!

4. When smokey eyes go wrong
The first time I came across eyeshadows, I went completely gaga over them. I was getting ready for my best friend’s birthday party when the disaster happened. I decided to use bright pink eyeshadow with my grey floral dress. I followed my routine of putting on eyeliner and mascara. My mistake was that I applied eyeshadow after doing my eyeliner and mascara. Obviously, my eyeliner got messed up and I added too much bright pink eyeshadow which made me look like someone had punched me. So ladies, even if you have the best of products but don’t know the right procedure of applying them, it is a beauty mistake. So after that blunder, I do the following – I use the NYX Professional Makeup Eyeshadow Base (Rs 725), apply my eyeshadow and blend it really well. I always make sure to wipe off any extra product. I then add my eyeliner finishing it up with lots of mascara. – Vatsala Devki Vats, Brand Content Writer
5. When I layered my foundation
I was never a fan of make-up and had no knowledge of the several layers and even product names until I learnt to style. My first attempt at make-up was a complete fail, I overdid the products and my face looked anything other than glowy. There was too much of foundation that wasn’t blended properly. After such a massive blunder, I worked on my skills and adopted the mantra – less is more. Today, I can do a glowy look without it looking caked up. A secret to achieving great blending is the beauty blender ( Rs 1899). – Arushi Sakhuja, Editorial Coordinator
6. When eye make-up ended up on my face
It was a friend’s birthday and she was throwing a costume party. I decided to go as a vampire ice princess (let’s just go with it). Anyway, for that particular make-up look, I had to use a red eyeshadow on my eyelid and lash line. Of course, that was the first time I was using eyeshadow, and I decided to do it after I had finished my entire face. I put the eyeshadow on and to cover up the gazillion mistakes I’d made while applying it, I wiped off the extra bit with a soaked cotton ball. When I say wipe, I mean literally dragging the cotton ball across my eyelid, down my face. Here’s what happened in the pictures that night – my face looked red, not flushed red, RED. The eyeshadow that I was so happily dragging off my eyelid had mixed into my foundation and made it tomato red with glitter particles. Seriously, get a phenomenal eye make-up remover like the Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover (Rs 399) and some Q-tips to correct your make-up mishaps, AND always do your eye make-up before you do your base, especially when going for a bold look. – Kannagi Desai, Junior Beauty Editor
7. Using mascara without any experience!
So I am genuinely not a make-up person and mascara was like an alien equipment for me. However, for one office party, I decided to use my friend’s mascara. BIG MISTAKE! I had no clue how to apply it and was so scared I would poke my eye with it that I ended up putting it all over my lids. This was after all my make-up was done and I screamed! I had to wash my face and do it all over again. For the longest time I did not use a mascara until I learned this hack of keeping your mascara in your stable hands close to your eyelash and closing your eyes and as soon as they are close to the mascara, moving your hand up so you end up applying the mascara on your lash without it reaching your lids. And I got it right in two tries. If you like to try the hack yourself, get yourself this Maybelline mascara (Rs 244) – Isheeta Sharma, Junior Lifestyle Editor
