We can always rely on Sonam Kapoor to leave us speechless at Cannes. And this collaboration is giving us such major #SareeGoals that we cannot NOT talk about. The actor wore a custom-made trouser saree by designer Masaba Gupta, styled by her sister Rhea Kapoor. The trio (Sonam, Rhea and Masaba) managed to give the garment a new lease of life!
The saree has been constantly reinvented by designers in India and abroad. From renewing the drape to experimenting with unexpected fabrics and giving it a 21st century twist – it’s all been done! But somehow, despite all the design innovations, the saree is perceived as a garment that can’t be worn every day. But not anymore!

Masaba deconstructed the saree and made it a three-piece outfit fit for an international red carpet event. She retained the drape but managed to give it more functionality in form – which evidently worked well for global appeal. And can you think of a better muse to wear something as risque as this trouser-saree?
“The basic idea was to be comfortable yet wear something that’s glam. Rhea wanted me to design cropped trousers and then I took it forward from there”, Masaba revealed about their collaboration. “We had two days to design the garment and all the spontaneity and creative rush pushed me into making this outfit look the way it does!” chuckled the fab designer.
Just like every year, Sonam’s looks at Cannes 2017 have been lit AF! She started off with wearing a ‘Shimma Shimma’ saree from the indie label ‘Nor Black Nor White’ which had fashion critics swooning.

Even her other outfits were SO pretty. Yes, we’re talking about the golden glittery Elie Saab gown and the custom-made Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla kaftan! The Kapoor sisters have definitely given us a lot to talk about!
