Our skin begins to lose moisture and elasticity with age but pollution is one of the main sources of skin damage, since toxins in the air cause the skin on your face, neck and hands to age prematurely. Smog, dirt and dust in the air clog pores and make the skin appear dull. But don’t panic just yet. Here are some important tips to protect your skin from pollution and combat its harmful effects. These will definitely help rejuvenate your complexion.
1. Moisturize like a boss
A good moisturizer like this one by Neutrogena will seriously shield your skin from the harmful effects of pollution. The fine dust and smoke particles will stick to your moisturiser instead of your face. They can be washed away and the effects are buffered, all thanks to your moisturiser.
2. Don’t skip the sunscreen even if it is smoggy
Remember, the effects of free radicals caused by pollution are worsened by exposure to UV rays. Wear a sunblock even if the sun is hidden behind a shield of smog. You may not be able to see the sun, but the UV rays are wrecking your skin without you even noticing. 10 years down the line, you’ll be glad you put in the effort, girls.
3. Don’t skip your vitamins
We hate to sound like a nag, but we hope you’re eating your veggies. Certain vitamins are antioxidants in nature (such as vitamin C and E), which are essential for dewy, clear skin. Healthy levels of these vitamins in your body indicate that your body is fending off toxins well. Consult your doctor to know whether you require supplements.
4. Be a water baby
Water flushes out toxins. It is uber important to stay hydrated so that there is no toxin build up in the body. The temperature dropping may mean you don’t get thirsty as often, but still drink up, it will show on your skin.
5. Double cleanse for perfection
Cleansing once isn’t enough. Double up to free your skin from those awful pollutants. Use a cream cleanser to take off your makeup and all the residue of pollution and use a foamy cleanser to purge the skin of all the impurities.
6. Load up on antioxidants
Consuming antioxidant rich food ensures that your body is functioning healthily and counteracting the pollution effectively. Citrus fruits and greens are an excellent source of antioxidants. These foods can literally make you glow.
7. DIY masks to fight dullness
Combine basic ingredients such as turmeric, lemon and honey into masks to rejuvenate your skin. These handy food items are excellent antioxidants which brighten up your skin instantly. Mix them with carrier oils if your skin is sensitive or very dry.
8. Exfoliate the ickiness away
Exfoliation gets rid of the dead skin build up and all the pollution trapped in there. It sloughs off the top layer to reveal dewy fresh skin beneath. Pick a mild exfoliant and use it 2-3 times a week, depending on your skin type.
9. Shield yourself
Invest in a good air purifier if you live in very polluted areas. Alternatively, you can opt for a good vogmask that would work even when you’re on the move. Since pollutants can wreck damage from within, it is important to make sure that we breathe clean air.
10. Clean it up baby
Pollution causes severe blackheads and whiteheads because of the residue build-up in your pores. Make sure you get regular clean-ups and facials to purge and even out your skin. Blackheads and whiteheads left unattended can develop into severe acne which may be harder to treat as time passes.
