The premenstrual syndrome can hit you like a hurricane at least seven to ten days before your period. Acne, bloating, mood swings, cramps, and fatigue–its agonising symptoms can turn the pre-period week into a nightmare. But sadly, the wrath of the evil PMS doesn’t end there. It can add to your miseries by causing breast soreness too!
Considering the stigma around breasts, this isn’t a widely-discussed symptom of PMS. However, it is extremely prevalent. According to a study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics & Gynecology, more than 50% of women suffer from breast pain during PMS.
Peeps, if your delicate darlings also ache during that time of the month, we’re here for you. We got in touch with Dr. Nanda Rajaneesh, Laparoscopic Surgeon & Breast Cancer Specialist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, to get to the root of the problem. Here’s all you need to know about PMS-related breast soreness and how to deal with it:
Why Do You Experience Breast Soreness During PMS?

“Breast swelling/tenderness/pain during or before the menstrual cycle is called cyclical mastalgia. It usually happens due to hormonal changes,” says Dr. Nanda.
She goes on to explain the role of the female sex hormones in breast pain. “The estrogen levels usually peak in the middle of the cycle while progesterone rises during the week before the period. The former can cause the breast ducts to enlarge and the latter can swell up the milk glands,” she says. The result? Pain, tenderness, swelling for your dear jiggly puffs.
Is It Normal?

It’s easy to throw yourself into panic mode when your sensitive breasts are involved. But before you start imagining the absolute worst, read this. “PMS-related breast pain is extremely common and normal. It should ideally subside during or after your period,” says Dr. Nanda.
However, if the pain lingers on, she says that you schedule an immediate visit to the doc. “Prolonged breast pain or swelling can be a sign of a serious underlying health condition like fibroids in the breast or breast cancer. One should ignore it and seek professional help for timely diagnosis and treatment,” she warns.
How Can You Deal With It?

If your breast soreness is just a PMS symptom, here are four effective ways to relieve yourself as suggested by Dr. Nanda:
Hot/Cold Compress
Applying a hot or cold compress on your breasts can provide some much-needed relief from pain and even reduce swelling. You can use a hot water bottle or a heating pad if you’re uncomfortable with cold compress.
Dietary Changes
Take a healthy, balanced diet and avoid junk foods. Steer clear of salty and friend food as well as alcohol and caffeine. Instead, have fresh fruits and veggies and keep yourself hydrated. It can make all the difference.
Supplement Your Diet
Certain nutritional deficiencies like that of magnesium and vitamin B6 can aggravate breast pain. You can start consuming a doc-approved multi-vitamin. You can even try Sirona’s PMS Gummies. These chewable gummies contain vitamin b6 to restore hormonal balance. They also contain Dong Quai (female ginseng) to help combat fatigue and lemon balm to soothe acne and irritation. Popping one gummy a day can work like a charm and relieve all your PMS problems.
Keep Yourself Comfy
Wear a supportive comfortable bra when breast pain is at its peak. Refrain from wearing tight or synthetic bras.
